Madagascar

I traveled to the montane rainforests of eastern Madagascar with three spider taxonomists and two local guides—in search of Darwin’s Bark Spider, the creature that makes the toughest material in nature. They were hard to find. I wrote a story about it for Vermont Quarterly and provided video footage for the BBC’s kid’s program Beyond Bionic.

I took the footage of spiders shown in this BBC video.

My colleague Ian did the editing, and I wrote the text and created the footage of this work in Madagascar—including the incredible singing boys at the end.

Here’s a shot I took of spider expert Matjaž Kuntner enjoying some facetime with a Darwin’s bark spider in Madagasar.

Ingi Agnarsson searches the forests of Madagascar at night—for Darwin’s bark spiders and their Caerostris relatives.

I found this Darwin’s spider crossing a river, laying out her own river of silk to build a bridge probably 30 feet long.
