The Unbearable Lightness of Greenland

How fast will Greenland melt? In a way, the fate of the world rests on this question. The ponderous tons of ice there will control sea levels in the decades and centuries to come. Camera in hand, I spent days flying in helicopters and skiing over the 1500-mile-long Greenland ice sheet with a team of geologists and climate scientists trying to answer that question. I developed stories about the trip and the science for Vermont Quarterly, the NASA homepage, LiveScience, and the Wall Street Journal that all flowed from my time on the flowing Greenland ice sheet.

A few years later, this expedition was followed by another amazing discovery by the same team of scientists. Looking at ice cores

CNN picked up on my story about Drew Christ’s amazing research on Greenland and developed their own coverage. They used my photo—of a stream of melting glacial ice water on the southwestern coast of the huge island—on the CNN homepage to illustrate their story.
